Donald Trump says transgender people will not serve in the US military

     
Donald Trump said on Wednesday he would not allow transgender individuals to serve in the US military in any capacity.

The US president tweeted:

“After consultation with my Generals and military experts, please be advised that the United States Government will not accept or allow … transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the U.S. Military.”

He added:

“Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming … victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail.”

Trump’s decision marks a sharp reversal of a policy initiated under Barack Obama, in which the Pentagon ended a longtime ban on transgender people from serving openly in the military.

His move to ban transgender people from the military comes after the Pentagon recently delayed a deadline set by the Obama administration of 1 July 2017 to decide whether incoming recruits who openly identified as transgender could enlist.

7 Twitter Users Sue Donald Trump For Blocking Them On His Own Twitter Account

Seven Twitter users have filed a lawsuit against
US President Donald Trump for blocking them
on twitter, thereby violating the Constitution.
According to Newsweek, the Twitter users, who
are being represented by the Knight First
Amendment Institute, filed a suit on Tuesday,
claiming that Trump?s ?viewpoint-based
blocking? is unconstitutional and ?imposes an
unconstitutional restriction on their participation
in a designated public forum.?
The institute asked a judge to rule Trump?s
actions of blocking their clinets unlawful and
force him to unblock them and also pay their
legal fees.
The Knight First Amendment Institute's
argument states that: The president's Twitter is
a public forum, and Trump is squashing his
critics' free speech rights by blocking them on
the basis of their political views. There is no
legal or constitutional precedent for a
commander-in-chief who uses Twitter as a
freewheeling venue to escalate feuds and block
those who disagree with or mock him.
?The First Amendment applies to this
digital forum in the same way it applies
to town halls and open school board
meetings,? the Knight Institute told
reporters.
?The White House acts unlawfully when it
excludes people from this forum simply
because they?ve disagreed with the
president.?
"The idea that a public official could
block citizens from hearing their official
speech just because they don't agree
with what that person thinks is contrary
to basic ideas of the First Amendment."
Katie Fallow, a senior fellow at the Knight
Institute, said.
"It's analogous to the public participation
component of a town hall. Allowing
people to get up and speak and discuss
the issues with each other is such an
important part of civic discourse. To
block certain speakers just because
they're critical is dangerous and
unconstitutional.
The account these twitter users filed a lawsuit
against is Trump's personal Twitter account
@realDonaldTrump not his official Govt. Twitter
account.

Twitter users sue Trump

A group of Twitter users blocked by President Donald Trump filed a federal lawsuit Tuesday claiming the White House is violating the constitution by keeping them out of a “public forum.”

The lawsuit was filed by the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University on behalf of seven people whose Twitter accounts were blocked by the president or his aides.

The complaint alleges that by blocking Twitter users based on their viewpoints, the president is keeping them out of online dialogue on current events, in violation of their free-speech rights in the US constitution’s First Amendment.

The blocking, the lawsuit said, “imposes an unconstitutional restriction on their participation in a designated public forum” and aims “to suppress dissent in this forum.”

The users were blocked from the @realDonaldTrump Twitter account because they criticised the president or his policies, the lawsuit alleges.

Also named in the suit were the president’s press secretary, Sean Spicer, and social media director Daniel Scavino.

The free-speech group said the White House failed to respond to a letter last month complaining about the blocking.

“President Trump’s Twitter account has become an important source of news and information about the government, and an important forum for speech by, to, or about the president,” said Jameel Jaffer, the institute’s executive director.

“The First Amendment applies to this digital forum in the same way it applies to town halls and open school board meetings. The White House acts unlawfully when it excludes people from this forum simply because they’ve disagreed with the president.”

Additionally, the lawsuit contends that the White House violates the rights of those who have not been blocked by purging critical voices from the social media forum.

“The White House is transforming a public forum into an echo chamber,” said Katie Fallow, a senior staff attorney at the Knight Institute.

“Its actions violate the rights of the people who’ve been blocked and the rights of those who haven’t been blocked but who now participate in a forum that’s being sanitised of dissent.”
