Odunlade Adekola is now one of the biggest fishes in the Nollywood river

Odunlade Adekola,
If a seer had told actor Odunlade Adekola about a
decade ago that he would be one of the biggest
fishes in the Nollywood river in ten years, he
probably would have laughed like the unbelieving
biblical Sarah!
Or not!
Considering the fact that the actor has always had
faith bigger than a mustard seed.
Odunlade today has gone from the ‘Sunday
Dagboru’, ‘Monday Omo Adugbo’ to ‘The
Vendor’!

The movie producer has produced over ten
movies since his breakthrough in the industry but
this is the first time Odunlade is producing a
Cinema movie, a break from his usual!
The movie, ‘ The Vendor’ from the short scenes
seen on his page is a comedy with English,
Pidgin and Yoruba well infused to make it a
standard cinema movie.
For the first time Odun is working with actress
Adunni Ade and some other top stars in the
business of acting.
We already foresee another box office smasher!
Kudos to Odunlade who has been able to leave
his comfort zone and try his hands on something
extra! We can’t wait to see ‘ The Vendor’ !

"Leave Charms Alone And Turn To God" Actor Ernest Asuzu Tells Nollywood Practitioners

In an interview with TS Weekend, Nollywood actor and born-again Christian, Ernest Asuzu, who suffered stroke years ago, talked about his return to the industry, how a man got jealous of his rising profile and inflicted him with stroke, his plan to bring change in Nollywood, where a lot of practitioners use juju and charms, among other issues. Read the interview below:

*Many people want to know what you?ve been doing since you recovered from your health challenge?
I have returned to Nollywood, my first love. But I want God to help me re-establish myself as a good Christian in Nollywood. After the first outing, which I considered a success by worldly standard, I went down with stroke. Before I took ill, I was living large, outgoing and flamboyant; but now I have returned to God and I want to change people?s thinking about actors in Nollywood, because a lot of actors are dying without knowing God. I want to introduce God to Nollywood so that they will know that there?s nothing they can do without God. Look at me now I have a Jeep. If anybody had told me when I was down with stroke that I?d ride a Jeep, I would not believe. But a man of God in Warri, Delta State blessed me with the car, that?s the car I brought to church today. Isn?t that marvelous? God saw my pain and faith in Him and intervened. The thing that happened to me wasn?t my making; a man got jealous of my rising profile and inflicted me with stroke. I don?t want to emphasise on that. Let God judge the man. I?m glad because I?m not dead yet, when you are dead, that?s when you are gone. Now that I?m alive and back on my feet, it?s the Lord?s doing. I am alive by the intervention of God so I want everyone to know that I?ve given my life to God and my movie life is running and thriving.
*Now that you?re back to Nollywood, what impact do you really want to make?
What I?m bringing back to Nollywood is concrete change. This is not a political slogan. What I want is for everyone in Nollywood to be God-fearing. I want the industry to know God because I?m a testimony. A lot of practitioners believe in charms, juju and evil, but when you know God, you will know it all and will not have room for doubt and unbelief. I want to bring God back to Nollywood, that?s what I want to accomplish this year.
*How do you want to achieve this since you aren?t a pastor?
I am not a pastor, but I intend to be a pastor, to preach the gospel. I know it is not easy to be a pastor but I tell you if God calls me, I will answer. I will either be a pastor or prophet. But I am begging them to leave evil alone. Evil does not pay anybody. They inflicted me with stroke but I did not feel I had stroke for one day. So, if God chooses me as his vessel, I will say ?Here am I, send me?. I want Nollywood to get closer to God because the time we are now is evil.
*If God calls you what message will you preach?
Love. I will tell people that God is love and that love conquers all. I will harp on love, agape love; that is unconditional love. God created this world out of love and out of love he gave His son. For God so loved the world that he created everything therein, so I will preach the message of love.
*You are sounding as if you are angry with the Nollywood family?
I?m not angry but I don?t like the way they treat human beings. What I don?t like about the practitioners is their heavy dependence and trust in charms. They should leave charms alone and turn to God, the ultimate for solution to all their challenges.
*You think if they embrace God things will be well?
Yes, certainly!
*As you are into music, are you also preaching the gospel through music?
What I?m doing is to use music as a channel to communicate my new found passion, which when all has been said, prepares you for a better life here and beyond. Salvation is not negotiable, and for me, it is a gift that Christians in Nollywood must accept as a plank to eternal life
*Is this your new belief also based on your recent robbery experience?
When I keep talking about the mercies of God, you may not understand. The robbery attack occurred around the premises of a transport company in Amuwo-Odofin, Lagos when I went there for a meeting. As I waited for my friend, in my car, two young men drove up to me on a motorbike and stopped by the car. One of them walked casually towards me and brought out a gun. He asked for money and my handset. Before I knew what was happening, he had collected every valuable thing from me. He looked at me and recognised me, he then asked: ?Are you not a Nollywood actor?? I answered ?yes, I am?. He turned, jumped onto the bike and zoomed off.

Don't Be Too Quick In Judging Celebrities With Crashed Marriages - Saint Obi Tells Nigerians

Veteran Nollywood actor, Saint Obi has pleaded with Nigerians not to be too quick in judging celebrities whose marriages have crashed.

According to the actor, Nigerians should not be too quick to judge their crashed marriages because they won’t understand the dynamics that operate in their homes.

The actor, in a recent interview with New Telegraph, made the statement while reacting to the cases which result to crashed marriages among celebrities.

He said: "Firstly, I must say that violence is not good. But sometimes, when it comes to issues about crashed marriages and stuffs like that, what I always say is that ‘don’t be too quick to judge’, because until you get married, I know you are, you won’t understand the dynamics that operate in homes.

'What works for Mr ‘A’ or Miss ‘A’ may not work for Mr ‘B’ and Miss ‘B’. So, things lead to things; but my advice is that rather than become violent, maybe you walk away or maybe give each other some space.'

'Sometimes some artistes push the other to the extreme, I say sometimes, not always. So, it is just the ability for one to understand when he is being pushed overboard, and control that urge to go overboard because some people can be terrible, and some people can be nice.'

'So, I will never advise anybody to be violent no matter the situation; but some people push people to the extreme,' he said.

Nollywood: Lari Williams and other artists pour encomiums on Veteran Actor Olu Jacobs at his birthday

Some Nollywood artists on Tuesday poured encomiums and lauded the contributions of Veteran Nollywood Actor, Olu Jacobs as he clocked 75 years.

They told the Nigerian Pilot in separate interviews that Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs has remained a professional per-excellence in the thespian world.

They also described him as a sterling source of inspiration and a grandfather actor to others in the entertainment industry in general and the movie sector in particular.

Nigerian Pilot reports that Olu Jacobs; born to his parents from Abeokuta, Ogun, on July 11, 1942, is married to another Nollywood actress, Joke Silva and are blessed with children.

Veteran artist Lari Williams and a contemporary of Olu Jacobs in the United Kingdom and in Nigeria described Jacobs as a consistent ambassador in the entertainment industry.

According to Williams, I first met Olu Jacobs at the Commonwealth Hall in London in September 1978 where he played the lead-role in my very first stage production, “Kolanut Junction’’.

“After then, I have had several personal and professional encounters with him in London and also in Nigeria where he featured in many soap operas.

“Olu Jacobs has both national and international experiences, both on stage and on the screen.

“I also met him in an NTA movie: `The third eye’ where he also displayed his professional skills. He can be described as a versatile actor,” he said.

Williams, who will be marking 50 years in the entertainment industry very soon, noted that Jacobs was more involved in the movies than in stage production, where he started from.

Williams attributed his to the fact that home movies have taken precedence over stage productions.

“Jacobs, currently, is more into the movie industry; playing the roles of the king and chiefs in most cases, I will rate him a good actor for his professional consistency,” he said.

Williams recalled that Jacobs had starred in several movies both in Nigeria and in London that have turned his name into a household name on the African continent and beyond.

Also, Tope Babayemi, Founder, Different Aesthetics, Arts and Culture Management based at the National Theatre Complex, Iganmu , Lagos State, said that  Olu Jacobs was and still remains  a force to reckon with in the theatre industry.

Babayemi said that Jacobs’ experience in the movie industry had spanned several decades culminating into his being addressed as a fine-grandfather actor.

“Olu Jacobs is one of the outstanding actors that I have high regards for and I can, confidently, say that he is among the forerunners who have contributed immensely to the growth of the industry,’’ he said.

Babayemi congratulated the family of Olu Jacobs as their Patriarch added another year to his age and wished him and his lovely wife, Joke Silva, many more meritorious years together.

“His wife who is also a veteran actress in the theatre industry has been instrumental to the development of the movie industry.

“Their combination as husband and wife and co-thespians has left a significant mark in the quality of movies produced in the country,’’ he said.

Similarly, Abraham Eromosele, a movie-producer felicitated with Olu Jacobs on the occasion of his 75th birthday.

Eromosele said that Jacob had graced several movies as an actor and had impacted positively in the development of the movie industry.

“Jacobs is an awesome personality when it comes to acting and he always has a way of passing the message of his role to the viewers.

“He is a blessing to the growth of the movie industry,’’ he said.

A new generation Nollywood actor, Baaj Adebule  also said that Olu Jacobs has remained a living legend that brought impeccable impact to the Nollywood industry.

Adebule of the Africa Magic TV drama series “Hush” said, “I grew up watching him and I also admire is distinct and baritone voice.

“His style of acting and high  level of professionalism has made a great impact in the development of the Nollywood industry.

“His lifestyle and marriage to Joke Silva is a lesson to learn from and, most especially, an inspiration to celebrities on how to live and sustain a healthy marriage.

“He is our father in the industry and he deserves to be honoured and celebrated as he turns 75 years.

“Happy birthday to the great one and I wish him more years of successes and achievements,” he said.

Nigerian Pilot also reports that Olu Jacobs spent his early childhood in Kano and attended Holy Trinity School where he was a member of the debating and dramatic societies.

He was inspired to take a chance with acting when he attended one of Hubert Ogunde’s annual concert party at Colonial Hotel in Kano.
Afterwards, he secured a visa and travelled to England to study acting.

He trained at The Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London.

He then starred in various British television shows and series in the 1970s including: The Goodies, Till Death Us Do Part, Barlow at Large, The Venturers, Angels, 1990, The Tomorrow People, The Professionals.

In 1978, he played the role of President Mageeba in Michael Codron’s presentation of Tom Stoppard’s play Night and Day.

In the 1980s, Jacobs starred in several international films some of which include John Irvin’s war film The Dogs of War, Roman Polanski’s adventure-comedy Pirates (1986) and the family-adventure film Baby: Secret of the Lost Legend (1985).

On television he was a cast in TVS’s The Witches and the Grinnygog (1983 series).

Jacobs has starred in over 120 Nollywood films .

The stage and screen actor who has been in the industry since the 1970’s has remained one of Nollywood’s leading stars and role model.

Recently, he was honoured with the Industry Merit Award for outstanding achievements in acting at the 2013 Africa Magic Viewer’s Choice Awards.
